Alice Emery: Proud to be Our First
Annuity Donor

Norridgewock, Maine

It doesn't matter what you give, it all counts. The important thing is that you give what you can.

Alice Emery

Alice with twin sister, Avis at their home in 2010.

Alice Emery, who worked for 45 years as a housekeeper, cook, driver, and caregiver for Harold and Dorothy “Bibby” Alfond, takes great pride in being the first MaineGeneral annuity donor. “It makes me very happy to be the first in something in my life,” beamed Emery, who beat out the second annuity donor by only two days.

Inspired by her own experience in a cancer center waiting room in Florida, Alice made an extremely generous gift to name the radiation oncology waiting area at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care.  Alice learned about the gift of giving from her close work with the Alfonds, and her philosophy is completely aligned with that of the Philanthropy office: “It doesn’t matter what you give, it all counts. The important thing is that you give what you can.”

When Alice first heard of MaineGeneral’s plans to build on the great success of the Alfond Center for Cancer Care by developing a new regional hospital, she was among the very first donors to make an outright leadership gift. Now that she is a savvy philanthropist, she used highly appreciated shares of Apple stock to make the gift, which enabled her to take full advantage of the tax benefits.  But she didn’t stop there.

Following up on a casual conversation about gift planning options with Philanthropy's Kate O’Halloran, Alice wanted to learn more about charitable gift annuities, which presented an attractive way for Alice to increase her initial new regional hospital gift.

She was intrigued by the fact that a gift in this form could not only generate income for her for the rest of her lifetime, but also for her twin sister Avis, with whom Alice has shared their family’s homestead for 74 years.

Alice is clearly a woman of great efficiency, as it took less than two days from when she reviewed the initial gift annuity calculations to when she signed the formal agreement, officially becoming our first charitable gift annuity donor. She said her decision was made even more easily when she compared the .45 rate of return she was previously getting on a bank CD to the 5.7% annuity rate offered by this gift. Alice (and then her sister Avis) will get quarterly payments for the rest of their lives, at which point the remainder will come to MaineGeneral to support the regional hospital.

MaineGeneral is partnering with Kennebec Savings Bank to manage our new annuity program and is pleased to able to offer this compelling gift opportunity. Annuities can be funded with cash or stocks and offer the peace of mind of a fixed income stream for you (and a loved one) for life.
