Bill and Kathy Purington:
State-of-the-Art Technology

Manchester, Maine

I imagine that the Alfond Center for Health will be a healing place that's state of the art, comfortable and friendly.  I image years down the road, knowing that our community sacrificed and did something great.  We'll all reap the benefits.

The environment that you’re trying to heal in is just as important as your doctors…

Kathy would know, having undergone chemotherapy followed by 33 consecutive days of radiation treatments in the spring of 2006 to combat stage 2 breast cancer. Treated before the opening of the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, Kathy received chemo treatment at the Thayer Campus in Waterville and radiation at MGMC in Augusta. Now a 5-year survivor, she has her follow-up appointments at the new center. She can attest to the change in care, thanks to the center’s welcoming, world-class environment, state-of-the-art, LEED-certified architecture, spacious infusion bays and a view that grows hope regardless of the season. Kathy and her husband Bill are confident the Alfond Center for Health will do the same.

You will be confident that you will receive the best possible care.

The cancer center has transformed the way we care for cancer patients, giving them confidence that the best in care is in their backyard. The Alfond Center for Health will do the same for the whole of health care delivery. It is estimated that our region loses $64 million each year because patients choose to go elsewhere for health care that we could provide here. In the Alfond Center for Health, patients will heal surrounded by natural light in private rooms that enhance patient safety, and reduce the risk of falls and infection. They will have more confidential communication with medical staff while friends and family are comfortably by their side. You will have confidence that world-class care is closer to home.

We deserved a cancer center and we built it. We deserve a world-class medical institution and we will build it.

Just after Bill Purington committed to support the cancer center, Kathy received her diagnosis. At the same time, Bill was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. All of a sudden the reality of how health can turn on a dime was very real. Their experience is part of why they’re so supportive of the Alfond Center for Health. They have seen the way cancer care was transformed—what it has done for patient confidence, physician recruitment and Kennebec Valley pride. The cancer center is not just a building; it is personalized specialist teams, compassionate social services support and a total healing environment. It is a place patients want to be treated and physicians want to practice. It is a place of healing. And we do deserve it.
