Gift Planning

The Kennebec Circle recognizes the tremendously loyal and committed benefactors, friends, retirees, and associates of MaineGeneral who have made an important commitment to its future through generous gift planning, in the form of bequests, charitable trusts and gift annuities. Throughout history, these gifts have played an essential role in MaineGeneral’s economic stability and continued success. Our community benefits every day from the powerful and lasting impact of these planned gifts, made throughout the years by donors with great foresight.

But what really is gift planning?

We understand that many of you might like to be involved with the new hospital /Thayer project or would like to support another area of the hospital but find it difficult to think about writing a check or giving away other valuable assets at this time.  Gift planning is the answer. We will work with you to better understand your broader financial commitments and provide you with various giving options that can allow you to meet those needs while also leaving your legacy and being a part of this historic project.  Whether you are considering a gift of $5,000 or $500,000, we will work with you in a confidential, respectful manner to explore your options.

Need an income stream now?

A charitable gift annuity can be a great way to make a gift but also generate a consistent income for you and a loved one for life. Alice Emery is proud to be MaineGeneral's first charitable gift annuity donor.

Or can you wait a few years?

Dr. Paul Gagliardi and his wife Alison wanted to make a significant contribution to support the new hospital. They made their first gift outright but added to it with an additional gift in the form of an annuity.  Since they don’t need the extra income yet, they elected to wait a few years to start receiving their deferred annuity payments. This will be an important part of their retirement planning, and their payments will be larger because they elected to wait.

Willing Supporters…

Since the early 1900s, the frugal yet generous people of Central Maine have included important organizations like Colby, the public library and the local hospital in their will. They recognized how important these institutions are to sustaining a vibrant community, and they wanted to be sure that everyone had access to good education and health care, regardless of what they could afford.  In the past decade, planned gifts from 61 donors have generated a staggering $6.7 million to support the important services MaineGeneral provides to our patients and their families; that is an average gift size of $110,000 per donor. Many of these people could never have imagined that their legacy could be so substantial.

Maybe We’re Already there?

Too often, people make a provision for MaineGeneral in their estate plans but we don’t know until it is too late for us to thank them in person, or get clarity on what they would most like their eventual gift to accomplish. If you have already included MaineGeneral in your plans, please tell us by completing the simple Kennebec Circle Membership form.  We are happy to keep this information confidential if you so desire.

Leave Your Legacy

If you’re considering including MaineGeneral in your estate plans, we’ve provided all the information and language you’ll need on our Estate Provision form.

Why Your Future Gift is So Important Now

Although gifts made by annuities and bequests are not matched as part of the Alfond Challenge, every gift is an important part of our ability to build and sustain the new regional hospital. The good news is that a future non-revocable gift (such as a gift annuity) can be added to an outright gift to qualify you for an appropriate naming opportunity within the new hospital.

We would love the opportunity to speak informally with you to help explore what gift planning options might best fit your situation and meet your needs. Please contact the Office of Philanthropy at  (207) 626-1809 or send a message to
