Elsie Pike Viles

In remembrance: 1914-2013

“…act that each tomorrow finds us farther than today.”
                                                                                                         Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

From her frequent and captivating recitation of Longfellow’s Psalm of Life to the way she embodied the wisdom of his words, Elsie Pike Viles lived the philosophy of acting “in the living present…that each tomorrow find us farther than today.”

She loved her country, owning her patriotism and acknowledging her slight historic crush on George Washington. She loved her community, inviting us into her home to celebrate — commanding us to sing along (always with happy compliance!) to the song sheets she provided. She nurtured us with her comedic wisdom and her blindness to social strata. She kept us on our toes with her sharp wit, savvy inquiries and mischievous smile. She supported endless efforts to make life in the Kennebec Valley better for everyone — friend, stranger or four-legged and furry! She taught us to embrace the sweeter things in life — lemon squares and garden parties with hats and good company.

She lived in color, extending her Greatest Generation grace to each of us, and encouraged us to do the same.
She pulled us into her joy for which we are ever grateful.
