MaineGeneral's Prevention and Healthy Living

In April 2014, the Central Maine community was formally introduced to the Healthy Living Resource Center (HLRC) through a launch event attracting more than 120 participants. At the time, Joy Osterhout, program leader of the HLRC, shared her vision, “We’re ready to provide tools to transform lives and create positive, lasting change for our patients, their families, our employees and our community.” Almost a year later, the program is doing just that!

Along with the launch event, the HLRC began offering health education classes focusing on healthy cooking and eating, physical movement and healthy mind and body.  Terry Gagne has been attending classes since the start. “After looking through your program, I was very excited about all the wonderful classes MaineGeneral was offering. I jumped onboard right away!” Gagne has taken such classes as Relax and Restore with Yoga Nidra, An Introduction to Plant-Based Cooking, Nonna’s Healthy Italian Cooking, Make Your Own Healthy Take-Out and Healing with Clay.

These innovative programs are offered at no or low cost. “It is very important to have these affordable programs available in the community,” said Donna Dodge, HLRC class participant since summer 2014. “Even if someone cannot afford to pay $15 for a class, the scholarship assistance is in place to give everyone an opportunity to be involved.”

In the first year the HLRC offered more than 75 classes and hosted more than 1,250 people. In addition to classes, every month the HLRC offers a free educational event and more than 850 people participated in these free monthly events. Scholarship assistance is provided to those who need help paying for classes. Over $1,400 in scholarships was awarded during the first year.

" I would recommend any of the classes being offered."

-Terry Gagne-

Gagne added with pride. “I find the instructors are top-notch, the facility is second to none, the prices are very reasonable, signing up for classes is easy and you come away with many ideas you can integrate into your daily living.”

“I live a few miles away from the Alfond Center for Health and love the opportunity to attend as many classes as my schedule allows,” Gagne added. “It’s great to meet others in my community who share the same interests and desire to eat healthy and maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

There is no better time than now to start living healthy.
