Every year MaineGeneral proudly distributes scholarships to traditional and non-traditional students interested in a career in health care. Many of these scholarships are gifts made by families honoring the legacy of loved ones who have passed away. Some of them had a passion for health care so a scholarship encouraging the same makes a perfect memorial!

The Michele Joly Scholarship Fund is a compelling example of a grieving collective putting purpose to their sadness by honoring a wife, sister, co-worker, caregiver and nurse who loved her profession and advocated for her patients and their families.

Michele joined what was known as Mid-Maine Medical Center back in 1979 and served in many roles, from bedside nurse to administrative director. She loved to teach and mentor new employees and was a true patient advocate. Her style was commanding and inspiring, always in the best interest of the patient. She was the “go-to” person when a job had to be done, which demonstrated her compassion, dedication and commitment to others. She was intelligent, generous and truly caring.

" I have heard so much from family and friends that work at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care about Nurse Joly. I am honored to be the first recipient of her scholarship."

-Kelsey Broad-

When Michele passed away last March, family, friends and co-workers pulled together to honor her. Steve Helme, Michele’s adoring husband of 28 years, collaborated with her long-time friend and co-worker, Annette Bowman, to establish a scholarship endowment in Michele’s name. The endowment enables people to contribute to the fund which will grow as a result of interest accrual and provide an annual scholarship for a hopeful area nursing student, thereby keeping Michele’s passion for nursing alive and well.

The first Michele Joly Scholarship was awarded this past fall to Kelsey Broad of Manchester who, after reviewing her application, seemed to embody many of the same qualities as Michele. In late February, Steve and some of Michele’s closest colleagues gathered to meet Kelsey during an emotional moment that showed Kelsey was every bit the perfect recipient they’d imagined.

When meeting Steve, Kelsey’s words of introduction were warm and moving: “I have heard so much from family and friends that work at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care about Nurse Joly.  I am honored to be the first recipient of her scholarship.”

March 21 marked a year since Michele’s passing. Her scholarship provides an opportunity to remember this remarkable woman while offering future nurses the opportunity to pursue a career that meant so much to her.
