Glenridge: Music and Memory Program

"Music is the only thing that reaches my dad now. He’ll smile — he’s there. It lets us connect with him again which is a real gift."
Paul’s daughter, Marianne White.

Music has proven to be extremely effective in unlocking long-term memories in individuals with dementia, giving purpose to the individual and helping them thrive for longer periods of time. In May of 2016 Glenridge became a Certified Music & Memory™* Care Facility. Staff participated in training and is now entering the study phase of the project. They recently received a grant providing a laptop and access to music and other resources to pilot the study with 10 selected participants. Glenridge would like to partner with community supporters to implement the Music & Memory™ project facility-wide.

Alive Inside* excerpt:

“Our approach is simple, elegant and effective: We train care professionals how to set up personalized music playlists, delivered on iPods and other digital devices, for those in their care. These musical favorites tap deep memories not lost to dementia and can bring participants back to life, enabling them   to feel like themselves again, to converse, socialize and stay present.

Music & Memory™’s work is rooted in extensive neuroscience research. The results can be nothing short of miraculous.”

The Therapeutic Benefits of Personalized Music:

Music & Memory™ programs have helped thousands of individuals struggling from dementia and other chronic cognitive and physical impairments reconnect with family, friends and caregivers through our personalized digital music program.

Alive Inside’s ongoing research and evaluation of  Music & Memory™'s work in care organizations shows consistent results:

  • Participants are happier and more social.
  • Relationships among staff, participants and family deepen.
  • Everyone benefits from a calmer, more supportive social environment.
  • Staff regains valuable time previously lost to behavior management issues.
  • There is growing evidence that a personalized music program gives professionals one more tool in their effort to reduce reliance on anti-psychotic medications.
